Snakes stick out their tongue, often for long periods or repeatedly as part of how it senses the environment, not because it’s showing emotion or being aggressive. They use their forked tongue to collect tiny scent particles (chemical cues) from the air. When they retract the tongue, they insert it into a special organ in the roof of the mouth called the Jacobson’s organ (or vomeronasal organ). The same organ tigers and other animals use during ‘Flehmen’. This lets them “smell” or analyze chemical information If the snake is highly focused, for example, tracking prey or sensing a threat, it might hold its tongue out longer or flick it more slowly or deliberately. Or It could be sampling a larger scent field, or waiting for wind/breeze to carry more particles toward it. Btw, the two tips of the forked tongue collect scent particles independently; one from the left side of the environment and one from the right. When the tongue is pulled back into the mouth, each fork delivers its sample to separate openings of the Jacobson’s organ. Isn’t that very cool? 😊 PS.
