Thank you to Fosterful and Anthem Hayden Church for partnering with us to purchase items for the sensory room at the CDA Child Welfare Office! ✨ A sensory room is so important because of what we now know about sensory processing, sensory integration, and trauma. We know that complex developmental trauma can begin in utero- this is when a person's sensory systems begin to develop. Our sensory systems work together to give us accurate information about ourselves, the world around us, and other people. When these systems have a communication breakdown it impacts everything we do on a day to day basis. Many children who have trauma also have sensory processing and integration challenges (not all children who have sensory processing challenges also have trauma), and a sensory room is a wonderful tool to help meet the neuro-biological needs of the nervous system to help a child feel safe, connected, and able to navigate their day to day lives. The sensory room can be used to help children feel safe and regulated when their nervous systems, situations, or thoughts cause them distress (fight/flight/freeze/fawn).

Happy (belated) Mothers Day to ALL the mothers, mother-figures, and fabulous female role models that raised us. On this episode of the Women’s Mosaic, Sarah Desjarlais joins us to talk about her experience raising both fostered and biological children, the great work done at Fosterful, and the changes she has seen in the foster care state program. For those interested in becoming a foster parent, this conversation is honest and real. As the executive director of the non-profit Fosterful, she shares her passion for helping these resilient children and supporting foster parents along their journey. Sarah tells us about her organization’s programs and how to become a volunteer in ANY capacity!

A few months back, I partnered with @wearefosterful —an incredible nonprofit supporting foster kids right here in Clark County. Together with my client, @allnatural_petsupply_ , we created a special auction item: “A Day in the Life of a Muralist + a chance to memorialize your pet.” It was a HUGE hit and helped raise $1600 for Fosterful! A few weeks ago, the amazing auction winners—Jackie, Byran, and their pup Bear (who will be featured on the wall)—came out to help me kick off the new mural for All Natural Pet Supply in Battle Ground. We were blessed with beautiful weather and had an absolute blast painting together. So grateful for this full-circle moment and the chance to give back through art.
