Did you know Frank Lloyd Wright helped shape a suburb just outside New York City? In 1947, a group of young middle-class New Yorkers purchased 100 wooded acres in Pleasantville. They did not want a typical subdivision. Led by Wright’s apprentice David Henken, they invited Wright to help guide a new kind of community called Usonia. Wright provided the site plan, designed three houses himself, and approved the remaining homes, most of which were designed by his Taliesin apprentices. Together, they followed his Usonian principles. The houses were single-story and organized around a central hearth. They had flat roofs with deep overhangs, radiant-heated concrete floors, and built-in furniture integrated directly into the architecture. Nature was central to the plan. The homes sit on one-acre circular lots designed to preserve existing trees and shared woodland. Wright believed houses should be “of the land, not on the land,” with walls of glass opening directly to the forest canopy. He even specified that beds be no more than 13 inches high, so homeowners would wake with the sun. Many of these homes have been passed down through generations, and today the community carefully reviews renovations to preserve the original architectural intent while thoughtfully adapting the houses for contemporary life. #usonian #franklloydwright #severance #midcenturydesign #architecture
