As a stylist, I’m breaking down the chemistry. Here’s why these common “facts” are actually fiction: 1. Split End “Repair” The Reality: Hair is non-living tissue. Once the cortex splits, it cannot biologicaly fuse back together. Styling and styling products can bind the frayed ends, but they don’t “fix” the hair. Mechanical removal (a trim) is the only cure. 2. “Ammonia-Free” = Safer for hair The Reality: Both ammonia and ammonia-free formulas are alkaline colors that must raise the hair’s pH to work. “Ammonia-free” is a sensory choice for those who dislike the strong smell, it isn’t inherently “safer” for the hair fiber itself. If you have a sensitive scalp or allergies, switching to ammonia-free isn’t a guaranteed fix. You can still react to the substitute chemicals or the pigments themselves. A skin test is mandatory for first timers and recommended every 6 months if you are regular to color as well. 3. Protein is “Lamination,” Not a Cure The reality: Protein treatments don’t actually “fix” or regenerate damaged hair, they act like a temporary lamination filling in the gaps to make your hair feel manageable, but they aren’t a permanent cure for chemical damage. We have to look at your hair history and future goals first. If you overdo protein, your hair becomes too rigid and loses its stretch.
