When a YA novel opens to a happy family, you just KNOW those parents are in for a real bad time in about 20 pages 😅 Honestly, I totally get why YA authors use the orphan/fridging the parents trope, because it’s kind of hard to go on an adventure and find your soul mate if you’re expected home for dinner, and the loss of a family member can be a really powerful motivation or inciting incident for a young character. Still, I do actually love when family dynamics are explored in YA fantasy (whether it’s bl**d relatives like in the Caraval series or a surrogate parent/stepfamily dynamic like Madoc in The Cruel Prince or Marisol in Once Upon a Broken Heart).
