The Scariest Painting Ever

The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli

T
2,319

The Scariest Painting Ever The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli The Nightmare simultaneously offers both the image of a dream—by indicating the effect of the nightmare on the woman—and a dream image—in symbolically portraying the sleeping vision.[2] It depicts a sleeping woman draped over the end of a bed with her head hanging down, exposing her long neck. She is surmounted by an incubus that peers out at the viewer. The sleeper seems lifeless and, lying on her back, takes a position then believed to encourage nightmares.[3] Her brilliant coloration is set against the darker reds, yellows, and ochres of the background; Fuseli used a chiaroscuro effect to create strong contrasts between light and shade. The interior is contemporary and fashionable and contains a small table on which rests a mirror, phial, and book. The room is hung with red velvet curtains which drape behind the bed. Emerging from a parting in the curtain is the head of a horse with bold, featureless eyes. #art #artgallery #mastersgaze

The Victorian era’s Gothic obsession with werewolves can be traced back to its love for all things mysterious, eerie, and macabre. Artists of the time, such as Henry Fuseli and Francisco Goya, often incorporated werewolf imagery into their works. DM for credit or removal ♥️

Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797) is best known as the author of ‘A Vindication of the Rights of Women’ and as the mother of Mary Shelley, who wrote ‘Frankenstein’. In the 1780s, Wollstonecraft encountered the eccentric, charismatic, Gothic-horror-leaning artist, Henry Fuseli (1741-1825) — whose painting ‘The Nightmare’ you might recognise! 🧛 Wollstonecraft became infatuated, and we don’t know whether the two had an affair. However, we do know that she proposed a ‘ménage-à-trois’ situation with Fuseli and his wife, Sofia, which was promptly rejected… I guess, ‘the worst they can say is “no!”’ #history #literature #gothic #frankenstein #shelley

@tishweinstock has a vampy presence like a Henry Fuseli-cum-John William Waterhouse painting come to life.  Having recently been swept up into the weird whirlwind of catwalk craziness and editorial glamour games, Weinstock’s recent experience is all an unexpected turn in her career as an editor extraordinaire – she’s beauty director at System and a contributing beauty editor at British Vogue. In addition, the Oxford graduate, 34, has just released her debut book. Entitled How to Be a Goth: Notes on Undead Style, it’s a morbid style bible tracing the aesthetic across literature, art and fashion, from Baudelaire’s Les Fleurs Du Mal (1857) and the haunting works of artist Hans Bellmer to the subversive theatrics of @viviennewestwood. “It’s basically a love letter to all things morbid and macabre. It traces the history of goth, something that precedes the [music and fashion] subculture [of the late ’70s and] ’80s, and is a celebration of all things dark,” Weinstock says.  Hit the LINK IN BIO to read the article inside 10+ Issue 7 in full. The making of ‘The Nightmare’, our homage to Henry Fuseli. This was the easies of all series for Tom was less hyper than his usual. He climbed the coffee table (used as bed here) three times before shooting🤗. The sequence you see here is about 4 minutes long in real time, and it was all that took for us to get the right photo. To expand the horrors of Halloween I offer Henri Fuseli The Nightmare – 1781 Since its creation, this painting has remained Fuseli's best-known work. With its first exhibition in 1782 at the Royal Academy of London, the image became famous. Due to this fame, Fuseli painted at least three other versions of the painting as well as etchings. It became an icon of Gothic Horror and the battle between humanity and the forces of evil. It has been referenced in writing, film and thought ever since it first appeared. It likely influenced Mary Shelly’s “Frankenstein”. Because her parents were friends of Fuseli, she would have been aware of this drama. The scene in which Frankenstein’s creature murdered the protagonist Victor's wife seems to draw from the canvas: "She was there, lifeless and inanimate, thrown across the bed, her head hanging down, and her pale and distorted features half covered by hair.” Edgar Allan Poe evoked The Nightmare in his short story "The Fall of the House of Usher". His narrator compares a painting hanging in Usher's house to a Fuseli work, and reveals that an "irrepressible tremor gradually pervaded my frame; and, at length, there sat upon my heart an incubus of utterly causeless alarm". He was friends with like-minded William Blake, who said of him “The only man that e’er I knew, who did not make me almost spew”. Sigmund Freud had a print of “The Nightmare” in his apartment, and Carl Jung referenced it in his writings on the nature of the subconscious. . . ©EdWheeler #arthistory #artteacher #museumlover #artlover #painting #digitalart #humor #santa #santaart #Christmas #photomanipulation #arthistory #ChristmasCards #SantaCards #fuseli #horror #nightmare
