Futuring is a new term for me and pretty cool concept! Here’s how they define it: “Futuring is the use of a systematic process to think about the future; framing and forming possible scenarios for the future to gain insight into the best actions to take in the present. Futurists use what they see in the present as a view on to the future; they watch trends and try to envision what may happen, but they are also aware that the future does not yet exist and thus is something to be created through the stories we tell. Futures studies collect and analyze signals and trends from the past and the present, to create scenarios about probable, possible, or desirable futures. Futuring involves looking at both large scale drivers of change but also weak signals as pointers of change beginning to emerge on the horizon - at the same time remaining conscious of "wild cards" and "black swan" events that involve great uncertainty and can’t yet be known.” You don’t know what’s possible to you see it and realize it in person. At the heart of this year’s #MixedClassroom is the concept of ‘captured futures’, the idea that the 21st century is caught in the dreams and aspirations of the 20th century. But these dreams don’t hold up anymore, they cannot be the future. This breeds backlash. In this radical age, how can we create new aspirations? How can we make sustainable and lasting policy in an age of polarisation? And how to address deep value disputes around justice and sustainability, as a student, policymaker, or NGO? In the 9th edition of our prize-winning course we will address these questions through #futuring. We will investigate how shared images of the future come about and how we can employ #futuring to build a better world. Join us to experience and immerse yourself in the work of Edinburgh School of Landscape Architecture @edinburghcollegeofart students and staff as they explore the potential of digital technologies as tools for world-building invisible presents and im/possible futures. 📅 10am-4pm daily 11-15 June 📍Inspace, 1 Crichton Street Edinburgh ‘Counter Archaeologies of the City-to-Come’ is an exhibition of digital experiences which reimagine and reconfigure Edinburgh’s George IV Bridge through a ‘digital excavation’ of the once-hidden spaces and imaginaries of the under-bridge. The works in the exhibition take ‘counter archaeology’ as a collective approach, using fiction as a practice for speculation and world-building to propose new and radical spatial imaginaries. Exploring urban in/visibilities including Hertzian wireless networks and short-term accommodation platforms, and futuring everyday artefacts to imagine unknown futures, the exhibition proposes new stories and myths which speculate alternative imaginaries for the monumental civic infrastructure of the bridge.
