In 1965 Gale Sayers was drafted by two leagues on the same day. The Kansas City Chiefs offered him more money. 🏈 He chose the Chicago Bears anyway. Because he believed in the NFL. And because something about Chicago felt right. What happened next was something nobody could have fully predicted. In his rookie season Sayers scored 22 touchdowns. Six of them in a single game. He moved in a way that made defenders look like they were standing still. But the greatest thing Gale Sayers ever did in a Bears uniform had nothing to do with touchdowns. It had to do with a teammate named Brian Piccolo. The two became roommates. A Black player and a white player choosing to room together in 1967. At a time in America when that was not a simple thing. And out of that choice grew one of the most genuine and powerful friendships in the history of professional sports. When Piccolo was diagnosed with cancer in 1969 Sayers never left his side. And when Sayers accepted the George Halas Award that year he stood at that podium and said he loved Brian Piccolo. In 1969. In front of everyone. And he meant every word. Gale Sayers took less money to play for the Bears. And what that decision gave the world was not just a Hall of Fame career.
