A large alligator climbing onto a stationary vehicle isn’t random behavior. It’s the overlap of three conditions that Southwest Florida puts in proximity more often than almost anywhere else. The first is size class. The animal in this footage reads as a large adult male, likely in the twelve-foot range. Florida’s official record is 14 feet 3.5 inches, set at Lake Washington near Melbourne, and the heaviest recorded specimen in the state exceeded 1,000 pounds. Animals at this size are solitary, territorial, and far less cautious of human presence than smaller gators. They hold ground. Florida has an estimated 1.3 million alligators, but only a small fraction reach this scale. The second is flood displacement. After heavy rain or storm surge, alligators are pushed out of ponds, canals, and retention systems into unfamiliar terrain. This was documented repeatedly during Hurricane Milton in 2024, with gators appearing in homes, on porches, and inside enclosed spaces. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission notes that sightings increase during flooded conditions, and biologists have observed that displacement can leave large animals temporarily disoriented. The third is territorial posture. Mating season in Florida runs roughly from April through June, when large males expand their range and push smaller animals out of prime territory. In a flooded street, a stationary vehicle isn’t recognized as a car. It’s an obstacle inside newly accessible territory. Warm surfaces, shallow water, and elevation create conditions where a large animal will climb rather than retreat. In Florida, behavior doesn’t change. The environment does.
