Huntington’s disease successfully treated for the first time ever. In this trial, scientists inserted a virus containing new DNA into the brain that helps neurons destroy dangerous proteins. Their data showed the treatment slowed the progression of the disease down by 75% - and this is just the start! Genotype is the complete set of genetic material that an organism inherits from its parents. It is the genetic makeup of an organism, and it determines the organism's traits. Genotype can be thought of as the instructions for building an organism. It contains the information for everything from the organism's eye color to its susceptibility to disease. Genotype is often compared to phenotype, which is the observable traits of an organism. For example, eye color is a phenotype, while the genotype for eye color is the specific combination of genes that determines eye color. Genotype is inherited from parents through reproduction. When two organisms mate, they pass on half of their genetic material to their offspring. This means that each offspring has a unique genotype, which is a combination of the genotypes of its parents. Genotype is important because it determines the organism's traits. These traits can affect the organism's survival, reproduction, and overall fitness. For example, an organism with a genotype that makes it resistant to disease is more likely to survive and reproduce than an organism with a genotype that makes it susceptible to disease. Here is a simple analogy to help you understand genotype: Imagine that genotype is like a recipe for baking a cake. The recipe contains all of the instructions for making the cake, including the ingredients, the amount of each ingredient, and the steps on how to mix and bake the cake. The ingredients in the recipe are like the genes in the genotype. The amount of each ingredient is like the number of copies of each gene that an organism has. And the steps on how to mix and bake the cake are like the instructions for how to build an organism from its genetic material. Just as different recipes can produce different cakes, different genotypes can produce different organisms. For example, the genotype for eye color can produce different eye colors, such as brown, blue, or green. Voiced @kaijinruh @facts_and_stuff_by_d #biology #genetics #gene #geneticengineering

Tardigrades, the ultra-resilient microscopic animals, have gone under the knife. Their genes have, at least. Scientists used an advanced CRISPR technique on water bears, the first non-insects on which the procedure was tested, in a bid to understand the animals’ “superpowers.” Experts believe lessons from tardigrades, who can survive extreme conditions of all stripes and repair their own DNA, could one day revolutionize the way human organs are donated and used in surgery. Something wild just happened in Down Syndrome research! They used a technique called CRISPR-CAS9 to cut out the extra chromosome in human cells, and it actually worked! It’s early, but this could be a real step toward future treatment. What do you think of this? Let me know in the comments! #GeneticsNews #DownSyndrome #CRISPR #MedicalBreakthrough #GeneEditing

Can a Single Injection Cure Blindness? The science that just made blindness reversible. This is real. Published in the New England Journal of Medicine, May 2024. The technique is called base editing — a more precise form of CRISPR that corrects a single DNA letter without cutting both strands of the helix. The gene: CEP290. The condition: Leber Congenital Amaurosis — one of the most devastating inherited blindness conditions known. And now — treatable. Imagine being born into a world of total darkness, only to have a scientist “click” your vision on with a single injection. No surgery, no bionic eyes—just a rewrite of your actual DNA. This isn’t sci-fi. This study, known as the BRILLIANCE trial, marks a historic milestone in genetic medicine. It represents the first time a CRISPR-based gene-editing tool was administered directly into a human body to successfully repair a genetic defect. This surgical precision at the molecular level allows the eye to heal itself from the inside out, turning a progressive darkening back into a world of light. #sciencereels #opthomology #cep290 #retinaldystrophy #geneediting

Researchers have discovered a naturally evolved gene-editing system, a variant of CRISPR, that activates genes instead of cutting DNA. This system recruits the cell's machinery to initiate gene expression, differing from traditional CRISPR, which cuts DNA. The molecular mechanism involves the CRISPR complex attracting RNA polymerase, the enzyme responsible for transcription, to the target DNA. This process can even activate genes lacking typical promoter sequences. The findings expand our understanding of CRISPR's natural diversity and offer potential for new gene-regulation technologies, including therapeutic strategies that turn genes on without permanently altering the genome. 🌐 Source: Purdue University 📷 Image credit: Tyli Jura | Pixabay
