Europe has changed a lot over the past century — not just in borders, but in where people live and how many there are. This comparison uses historical census data from national archives and academic demographic research for 1939, and UN mid-year estimates for 2025. 1. The #1 spot literally stopped existing. In 1939 the Soviet Union alone had ~171M people. The USSR is gone, and its former republics are now split — Russia, Ukraine, etc. So Russia is still huge in 2025, but not nearly at that old Soviet scale. 2. Türkiye is the big climber. Türkiye wasn’t even in the top 5 before WWII. Now it’s #2 with ~88M people. It’s decades of higher birth rates plus massive urbanization (Istanbul alone went from ~1M mid-20th century to well over 10M today). 3. Western Europe held its rank, but not for the reason people think. Countries like Germany, France, the UK are still high on the list in 2025 — but most of them aren’t growing because people are having more kids. They’re staying large because of migration and because people live longer. In other words: they’re not young, they’re just not shrinking. 4. Western/Northern Europe shows a different pattern. The Netherlands and Sweden are interesting. They weren’t anywhere near the top 10 before WWII; now they’re in the top 15. That’s urbanization, relatively stable economies, and decades of attracting talent and workers from abroad. 5. Eastern and Central Europe tell the opposite story. Poland, Romania, Ukraine were all major population centers before the war. By 2025, several of these countries are dealing with low birth rates, people leaving for work abroad, and in some cases war and economic shock. You can see it directly in the rankings. 6. Europe got richer, older… and uneven. Across the top 15 countries, the total population goes from about 518M in 1939 to 716M in 2025. Sounds like healthy growth.
