Does everyone has the right to start up a small business even if it means stealing from another small business? Creating stronger communities is how we battle these big corporate entities. Creative HUMAN solutions are available. And a business owner still needs to have a way of turning on the electricity, paying the rent, and hiring an artist, too. We aren’t that expensive ffs. 😤🔥AI tech is big corporations. It is anti-community. It is anti-human. Why do artists have to be the indentured servants in this scenario? Because whether you’re requiring us to volunteer our labor or you’re using a technology to replace our labor— a technology that forced us without permission or compensation— to volunteer our property made with our labor, you, as a small business, are sending a clear message that you don’t see artists as people. You can’t preach community and a value and care for local businesses and people if you use generative Ai. I know it’s hard to promote your small business. And when graphic design is not your passion it’s even harder⁣ You want to focus on making your product better⁣ Not on doing the dance for social media⁣ ⁣ But trust me, EVERYTHING is better than using ai to promote your business⁣ ⁣ By using AI you will lose the trust of many of your customers. If you’re willing to use an all-destroying, stealing machine that takes away all humanity from the way you promote yourself… you’re customers will start to worry about what else in your business you’re willing to put away your ethics for.⁣ ⁣ If I’m seeing a small business that I follow use ai, I usually reach out to see if they know about the cost of ai. Because still, not everyone does. And if they keep using it I unfollow and will never buy your product again.⁣ ⁣ If you’re an author who has written a book, and you use ai for the cover…. I've watched an utterly depressing number of local businesses using generative AI to produce their advertising, or for jumping on viral trends like staff portraits or those god awful action figures from last year. What you might feel is saving you time and money as a business, is painting yourself as low quality and tacky. Generative AI is easy to spot when used for graphic design and I personally have created an internal blacklist of sorts for places I've seen heavily relying on it. It might sound like snobbery, but putting my money where my mouth is and voting with my feet is important to me, and I'm not the only one. These aren't the words of a "worried illustrator", I won't delude myself into thinking that my local woodyard would ever have been emailing me to commission a drawing of their team in a cartoon style. This is a movement, where we should be realising that Gen AI isn't giving artistic genius to those who have not worked for it, but it is sucking the soul out of the magic that is human creativity. It is incredibly bleak. So don't tarnish your small business with instantly recognisable signs of low quality and tackiness. Or do, but be aware that a growing number of your customers will be put off by your latest piss coloured inaccurate fingered "masterpiece".

Allegedly and for entertainment and educational purposes only. Be sure to dig deeply into the terms of service on all these Generative Ai apps because you might be handing over rights you don’t actually have and rights you should hold onto. I’d be very curious to know how much due diligence this and other companies are using to make sure protected IP is not being fed into the sausage grinder plagiarism machine. I’ve had storytime book influencers feed my book art into a generative AI app without my or my publisher’s permission—with terrible results, by the way—and not only is this not a kindness, it is illegal. The apps have enough protection in their terms of service that they won’t have to take the fall for this, but you could be legally in trouble.
