Let’s talk about that dirty word people don’t like talking about. Genetics. *Gasp* When @chriswillx brought this up on our podcast episode, I almost cried a happy tear because even people in the fitness industry don’t talk about this often. Genetics role in body weight is a very hotly debated topic. On one hand, many obesity researchers will discuss the role that genetics play with how much you weigh, how much body fat you store and where you store it. On the other hand, some angry personal trainers get VERY upset when you even mention the word genetics, because this somehow implies you are “making excuses” and “removing personal responsibility”. So, here is the deal. There are likely genetic contributors to why you weigh as much as you do, and what your fat storage pattern is. To what degree? It’s hard to say for sure. No, this doesn’t technically remove any individual responsibility. Some of you are dealt better or worse hands by the casino, and acknowledging that your hand might be worse isn’t telling you that you need to fold and go home. But, acknowledging that some of you are dealt better or worse hands is probably a good idea. Why? Because to many people, losing a significant amount of weight and keeping it off is extraordinarily difficult, and many people who haven’t been through that don’t realise just how difficult it is. Acknowledging its harder for some people does not equal removing personal responsibility. Sound fair enough? P.S.
