Their father, a Navy captain, is missing at sea. After their aunt becomes resentful over dwindling rations, Seita moves them into an abandoned bomb shelter. Though they find brief joy in the light of fireflies, their situation turns dire as food runs out. ​Seita resorts to stealing to survive, but Setsuko soon falls ill with severe malnutrition. Upon learning of Japan's surrender and his father's likely death, Seita returns to find Setsuko dying. He cremates her, carrying her ashes in a candy tin. Shortly after, Seita dies of starvation at a train station. A janitor discards the tin, releasing Setsuko’s spirit.
