🥹🦎🧫✨CoCo’s 4 month journey you may remember that about it 4 months ago, i rescued coco! she was a pale, fingerless, skinny, stubby-gilled axolotl found at a local fish store near me. i was told she was a surrender, which is heartbreaking because not only this, but she had also been mistreated to the point that it began to affect her physically 😢 i was determined to nurse coco back to health, which i started by giving her a good diet. I fed her live worms every single day, and she was healing great, growing her fluffy gills back… but then she grew fungus on her gills 😩 i used the API Freshwater Master Test Kit by @apifishcare and saw that her water had a little bit of ammonia in it, so I quickly did a water change and the fungus fell off almost immediately! Was out hiking in Massachusetts when I found this giant cluster of #Trainwreckers #Neolentinuslepideus. These are saprotrophic (decay) mushrooms that tend to grow in clusters on pine or other conifers. They have distinctive serrated gill edges, giving them the other common name of “Sawgills”. The scaly pattern on the cap is also a distinctive feature this species along with the piney aroma. . Similar to shiitake, these mushrooms came from a Polypore genetic lineage but evolved into gilled mushrooms. When young they are relatively tender and tasty, but as they grow older they turn yellow/orangish and get exceedingly tough. I cooked and ate these, I found the initially flavor to be a bit odd, but the after taste was sweet/nutty and the texture was great. Taking a quick break from Morel season to flashback to Massachusetts summer and this impressively slimy purple #ViscidVioletCort #Cortinariusiodes. It is a mycorrhizal species that grows in association with deciduous hardwoods (particularly oak). It can be found often on the edge of moss, bogs, and swampy edges. This is absolutely one of my favorite mushrooms to find, the brilliant lilac purple stands out against the browns and greens of the forest floor, while the wet Viscid cap is a textural rollercoaster of somatic sensation. Cortinarius species can have extremely slippery tops due to being coated in a layer of hygroscopic (water loving) polysaccharides that help keep the cap moist while the mushroom is developing. A clever adaptation that helps them withstand changing environments. . Cortinarius is the largest and most diverse genus of gilled mushrooms. While there are the occasional edible species, some Corts can contain Orellanine, a toxic compound in some species than can cause delayed long term symptoms leading to renal (kidney failure). As such, many foragers rightly avoid eating Cortinarius species. I believe iodes is technically edible but bitter and very slippery. Probably best to look and touch, but not eat. .
