The sound from the bell creates waves of Om, which is a sacred sound in Hinduism and also a sign of positivity cleansing our thoughts and calming our minds. Bells invoke our inner consciousness enabling us to focus on the importance of transcending from the physical realm and connecting with Ultimate Reality. When Kobo Daishi Kukai founded Mount Koya approximately 1,200 years ago, Danjo Garan was the first building to be begun. As you pass through the gate, gazing up at the imposing guardian deities, you will come across numerous structures that allow you to experience the ideas of Kukai and esoteric Buddhism. The greatest towering structure among them is the Great Pagoda of the Foundation. Normally, photography is prohibited, but today I will give you a special look at its interior. In esoteric Buddhism, the visualization of the Buddhist worldview is called a mandala, and because the Great Pagoda of the Foundation itself is constructed as a three-dimensional mandala, we can experience that worldview using all five senses. At the center is Dainichi Nyorai. Four Buddhas and sixteen Bodhisattvas surround it on all four sides. 1200 years of history, Kukai's philosophy, and the prayers of the people. Also, temples and shrines are not theme parks. They are places where people with worries come to pray, express their daily gratitude, or meditate to reflect on themselves. Even if you wish to take photos or videos, consideration and respect for these people must come first.
