The safest way to use Clawdbot (now called Moltbot) is to not use it at all. That’s not me saying that. That’s Google’s VP of Security Engineering. If you’ve been on tech Twitter this week, you’ve seen the red lobster everywhere. Clawdbot, rebranded as Moltbot after Anthropic sent a cease and desist, is the hottest open source AI project right now. Over 100,000 GitHub stars. As the homepage says, it’s basically Claude but it can do anything it wants on your computer. Read your emails, execute shell commands, control your browser, manage your calendar. You can communicate with it through Telegram, WhatsApp, Discord, Slack. Here’s the issue: security researchers found over 1,600 exposed Moltbot instances on the internet with zero authentication. API keys, OAuth tokens, full conversation histories exposed. In some cases, complete shell access to the entire machine. It took five minutes. And it gets crazier. When Anthropic forced the rebrand, the founder renamed the GitHub and Twitter accounts at the same time. Crypto scammers snatched both in about 10 seconds. They took over the accounts, started pumping a “Claud token” to the audience, got it up to $16 million before it crashed 90%. Moltbot is a sign of things to come, but right now it’s a security nightmare. It stores credentials in plain text, has no sandboxing by default. Security researchers are calling it “info stealer malware with extra steps.” Unless you’re installing it on a completely isolated machine with none of your credentials, skip Moltbot for now.
