Hi! I’ve gotten asked about art school a lot recently. Is art school worth it? My initial plan was to do the full art degree route but as some of you know I dropped out after the first year. * This winter I was struggling with attendance and later went on sick leave for mental health reasons which made it impossible to focus on art altogether. Altough this is unrelated there are actual reasons as to why art school in general isn’t a good fit for me personally. * Turns out my passion for art is extremely fragile and sensetive to environment and pressure. Starting at 9:30 expected to perform and then even if you have flow - checking out when the building locks. Or feeling extremely inspired to paint but being forced to do class meetings, group cleaning or lecture. I realized that I needed the freedom to create on my own terms, without the constraints of a schedule or rules. * Similair to how many anime artists express not being taken seriously in prestigeous art institutions for example -fitting in… -My school was very open to everyones styles but it is impossible to not notice a trend or ideal way of working in any environment like this.I feel like my style wasn’t a good fit with what my school specialised in (which is ok!) so it was very draining for me to be encouraged to do stuff that didn’t feel right for me. *I also felt like school was holding me back financially and timewise from building ”my business”. My career was starting to take off in other areas, but school was preventing me from pursuing scholarships and taking time off to work on important projects. THAT BEING SAID if any of my former classmates or teachers read this sorry for being weird i really wasn’t enjoying life during our relationship lmao but more importantly thankyou for letting me see your art, you were all so cool, inspiring and hard working ❤️ I even met one of my best friends there! Unfortunately my personal life clashed with this opportunity but I am confident in my decision and excited to see what’s next for me and all my classmtes. I recently received a dm asking from someone about to decide which art uni to go to so, This is a video on why I chose @goldsmithsuol and @goldsmithsart over the other universities I was offered. I think it does come down to personal preference but for me, goldsmiths was a better fit. I liked the fact that we weren’t set briefs and had freedom to do what we want to, as you would as a practicing artist. I also think access to all of the facilities is really important and that was something goldsmiths offered. For me it was really between CSM and Goldsmiths.
