🛷What is Glissading: Glissading is descending a steep snow slope by standing, crouching or sitting. If sitting, you typically go faster if you have a rain jacket wrapped around your bum or are wearing pants. This will also save you from getting scratched up or soaked like you would in shorts. Depending on how steep the slope is, you may want to dig your pole or ice axe into the ground to control your speed. Glissading is not only fun to try out, but it also saves you time and from hiking all of the switchbacks heading back down the mountain. 🥾SKYLINE TRAIL 📍Mt. Ranier National Park 🥾~5.6 mile loop, ~1.770 elevation gain 🚘Large parking lot at trailhead, located at the Jackson Visitor Center. Another large overflow lot a short walk away. ❣️TIPS: Arrive early to avoid crowds! Be sure to Stop at the Bathroom at Panoramic Point, it has a unique flushing system and the most amazing bathroom view. ⚠️Always check the weather beforehand, if there is heavy snow on trail, navigational skills are required, microspikes recommended, and maybe even snow shoes. 🗑️ Please ALWAYS remember to Leave No Trace or help keep our outdoors clean by picking up trash while you’re there. ⬇️Have you ever been glissading before? My new favorite mode of transportation: glissading ❄️🏔️ Have you ever glissaded?? This clip was taken moments before chaos entered the chat. We hiked down to the next glissade spot, and it’s one of those “turn the corner and send it” situations. My husband went first, smooth, graceful, 10/10 execution. I follow right after… and immediately discover a surprise ✨drop✨ that launches me into warp speed. Like blink-and-you’re-now-a-human-toboggan fast. Then comes a bump… and suddenly I’m airborne, arms fully extended, ice axe included, screaming like I just got launched out of a cannon 💀 Which, for the record, is basically the exact opposite of what you’re supposed to do. Instead of using the ice axe to slow down, I chose panic, vibes, and flight. So if you’d like to learn from my very educational experience, here’s what you actually need for a successful glissade: • Something slick to sit on (dry pants = happy life, soggy butt = bad decisions) • An ice axe to brake yourself like a semi-responsible adult • A little bit of courage and a lot less chaos than I brought • Ideally, visibility of where you’re about to launch yourself 10/10 would do it again though 🤭 Next time you’re in the mountains, give it a try… just maybe don’t recreate my accidental stunt double moment because flying off a snow slide is mildly terrifying

When It's (Relatively) Safe to Glissade Without an Ice Axe: The slope is gentle to moderate (generally under ~30°). The snow is soft but not slushy—firm enough to support a smooth slide, but soft enough to brake with your hands and heels. The runout is clear, long, and free of obstacles (no rocks, trees, cliffs, or crevasses). You are confident in controlling your descent using body positioning and braking with feet and hands. --- Technique for Seated Glissade Without an Ice Axe: 1. Sit Down: Position yourself upright with legs extended slightly apart in front of you. 2. Heels for Braking: Dig your heels gently into the snow to control speed. Too much and you might tumble; too little and you’ll accelerate. 3. Hands for Balance: Use gloved hands pressed against the snow beside your hips to steer or stabilize. 4. Lean Back Slightly: But not too far—keep your center of gravity low and stable. 5.
