For like the first two years I had global entry, there really wasn’t any situations where it proved to be substantially faster. My husband commented that he didn’t think it was worth it and then it finally happened. A line so long it just about caused him to miss our connecting flight back home. By seconds. Ever since then he decided to apply for global entry, and since that trip we’ve run into a couple more situations where having global entry definitely saved us! What do you think? Global entry? ‼️U.S travelers, this is your warning! “I could fine you $500 right now and revoke your Global Entry.” I was standing there waiting for my luggage when a Customs & Border Control officer came up to me, saying the K9 was smelling food and asked if I had anything on me. Shoot… I forgot I had an apple from Amsterdam that I was supposed to declare at customs. They took my passport and went through all my bags. He said if I had lied about the apple, I would’ve gotten a $300 fine. Then, I could’ve gotten another $500 fine just for having it, plus risked losing my Global Entry because you’re held to a higher standard. Be sure to declare these upon arrival: - Purchases over $800 - Cash or traveler’s checks over $10,000 - ALL food, plants, and animal products - Check the full restricted/prohibited items list at [cbp.gov] When in doubt, DECLARE IT! It’s not worth the fine or confiscation. Thankfully I was given a warning since this was my first offense, but it was a huge reminder to take this seriously. I genuinely forgot about the apple, and declaring things wasn’t top of mind since they stopped having you fill out those forms on the plane. Don’t forget this next time you fly internationally. Don’t get TSA PreCheck - get this instead! Global Entry costs just $15 more and INCLUDES PreCheck - you go through a bit more of an involved process (ex an in-person interview, though they are trialing virtual interviews soon!), but the expedited entry back into the country is worth it. With Global Entry being shut down, you still have options. Mobile Passport Control is a completely free alternative government program that helps you get thru customs faster. Comment MOBILE For the link! Just download the app from the App Store, scan you passport, and answer the questions. You can process up to 12 people in a single application. And you can do this right when u land up to 4 hours before. This will allow you to get in the much shorter MPC line. Instead of the regular line, which is even LONGER currently.
