I’ve had several requests for a video breaking down my gold leafing process more thoroughly, so here it is! —— Materials: @barnabas_gold gold leaf adhesive and 24 karat gold leaf Sim 24 karat gold leaf (either of these brands are great) @artezaofficial detail brush Old watercolor flat brush @hahnemuehle_global Museum Etching printer paper Note: I prefer to use 24 karat gold leaf because it doesn’t tarnish and it powders, making application easier for me. A copper/gold mix is a perfectly adequate and less expensive alternative, though. Just be aware that it’s a little trickier to apply and it will tarnish, so be sure to research how to properly seal it. ✨✨ The reason I water down my adhesive is that Barnabas is quite thick, and I like my gold leaf to lie flat against the paper. It does look very cool when it’s not watered down, though! Just be sure to leave space between it and the glass when framing or it will get smooshed. 😆 You can find all three of these prints in my online shop! It’s a year since we first shared our viral gold beads conservation film. For anyone who missed it first time around, here it is again! To pre-empt some of the common questions that were asked last year: ⭐ The gold leaf is incredibly thin and delicate (around 0.0005 mm thick!) and it would simply tear apart if you tried to push it down through the water rather than up from underneath. You would also end up with water on the outside of the gilded bead and that would change the way the gold looks - this way the outside of the gold leaf stays dry as it wraps around the surface of the bead. ⭐A very weak glue in the coloured preparation layer is applied to the bead before gilding. When the bead is immersed in the water this glue is reactivated and the gold sticks to the surface. This layer is also absorbent so as the water under the gold leaf gets absorbed into the bead it takes the gold leaf with it until it’s attached to the surface of the bead. ⭐Cotton wool is known as ‘absorbent cotton’ in the USA - for our American followers who aren’t familiar with the British term. #royalcollectiontrust #behindthescenes #gilding #goldleaf

HOW TO APPLY GOLD LEAF ON CANVAS. Thanks to these few techniques, you can apply the beautiful, yet delicate gold leaf onto your canvas seamlessly: 1-Apply glue. Thin coat. Wait AT LEAST 20 minutes before applying the gold leaf, until the surface is tacky as shown 2- Apply gold leaf with the assistance of wax paper to avoid breakage. 3-Smooth out the surface and remove excess with a brush and gentle pressure from a cotton ball or cloth. 4-Apply a sealer, wait at least 30 minutes becore painting over your canvas.
