We love these neighbors… Pocket gophers dig tunnels underground which they use to travel and live. In doing so, they are aerating our soils, which means plants are better able to grow. It also means when we get rains the ground is able to absorb the water (instead of running off into streets/sewers) and this absorption also prevents erosion. As well, these tunnels provide homes/protection for other species of animals. Lastly, maybe you’ve seen the magical disappearing act of weeds being pulled underground. The roots are being eaten (!) and this helps with fire abatement in prone areas. So, next time a hole appears in your lawn or some flowers disappear, instead of getting angry (and deploying poisons and kill traps), try to remember this face and what these families do in our world. These two tiny Botta’s pocket gophers had a rough start at life — when their mother was killed by another animal, they were left to fend for themselves. The team at our Pilar & Chuck Bahde Wildlife Center jumped into action, syringe-feeding them until they were ready to munch on veggies and greens on their own. After 22 days in care, these resilient little gophers were released back into the wild! Though small, gophers play a big role in our ecosystem. Their burrowing aerates soil, reduces compaction, mixes nutrients and plant material back into the earth, and even brings minerals to the surface — helping plants thrive and increasing the soil’s ability to soak up water. Mazama pocket gophers are fossorial, meaning they are adapted to digging and live underground most of the time. This particular gopher is looking to get rid of excess dirt as fast as possible. These pocket gophers could fit in your pocket, but that's not where they get their name (...or belong). Pocket gophers have fur-lined cheek pouches or "pockets" for transporting roots, tubers and other vegetation. Four subspecies of the Mazama pocket gopher, including this one, are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and are endemic to the South Puget Sound region of Washington.
