Saving a tiny tortoise in the road!! This is a tiny hatchling gopher tortoise! The gopher tortoise is a true keystone species, which means a ton of other wildlife depends on it to survive. They dig these massive burrows, sometimes over 30 feet long and 10 feet deep, that stay a relatively stable temperature year-round, and more than 350 other species have been recorded using them, from gopher frogs and indigo snakes to insects and even small mammals. You’ll usually find them in dry, sandy habitats like longleaf pine forests, scrub, and coastal dunes, where they spend most of their day grazing on grasses and other plants. They are listed as threatened in Florida mainly because of habitat loss and development. One thing I always try to stress is that you can help them cross the road, but otherwise it’s illegal to move or disturb them or their burrows without proper permits—so if you see one, the best thing you can do is just let it be and appreciate it(unless it is in the road and needs saving). If you find a tortoise or turtle crossing the road, you can help it by moving it across the road and the direction it was headed. They’re slow-moving, long-lived animals that can survive for decades, and every single one plays a role in supporting an entire underground ecosystem that most people never even realize exists. #Animals #tortoise #scicomm

More than 350 different species have been documented using the burrows that gopher tortoises create. As you can see in this video, these range from mammals, like the imperiled Florida mouse, to amphibians, like the secretive gopher frog! An unusual sight from this time last year. A young gopher tortoise going for a swim and then basking for a bit (realistically resting after the swim) then continuing on. Though you never want to default to placing a tortoise in a body of water 🙅‍♂️ they are more than capable swimmers. For example : The largest extant tortoise species the Aldabra and Galapagos tortoise’s have been found covered in barnacles from lengthy swims to different neighboring islands!
