Während der Nürnberger Prozesse gab der ehemalige Oberbefehlshaber der Deutschen Luftwaffe Hermann Göring dem Psychologen Gustav Gilbert im Gefängnis ein Interview. Göring sagte: „Natürlich will das Volk keinen Krieg. Warum sollte ein einfacher Bauer sein Leben riskieren, wenn das Beste, was er aus einem Krieg herausholen kann, ist, unversehrt zu seinem Hof zurückzukehren? Niemand will Krieg – weder in Russland, England, Amerika noch in Deutschland. Das ist offensichtlich. Am Ende aber bestimmen die Führer eines Landes die Politik. Und das Volk dazu zu bringen, diese Politik zu unterstützen, ist einfach. Es spielt keine Rolle, ob es sich um Demokratie, Kommunismus, Parlamentarismus oder eine faschistische Diktatur handelt.“ Gilbert erwiderte: „Aber die Demokratie hat einen Unterschied – das Volk kann seine Meinung über gewählte Vertreter äußern.“ Göring antwortete: „Natürlich, das ist gut, aber egal, ob das Volk eine Stimme hat oder nicht, es kann immer zum Gehorsam gezwungen werden. Es ist einfach: Sag ihnen, sie werden angegriffen, und beschuldige dann die Pazifisten, das Land zu gefährden. Das funktioniert in jedem Land.“ 18.
