Is grading good or bad? ✏️📚📊 Countless studies have proven over and over again that extrinsic motivation (punishment and reward), such as grading, undermines the quality of the task and negatively impacts the person’s wellbeing. We are all very familiar with “studying only for the grade” and the immense levels of stress that children experience due to the grading system. There are much better alternatives to this system if we truly aim for deep and meaningful learning. Learning does not need to be graded, it needs to be done for its own sake and for the sake of doing something useful to the world. Assessing one’s progress towards a certain self-defined goal is meaningful, grading is not. It is destructive to the learning and the spirit of the child. A personal resume-like system has been adopted in Lumiar School in Brazil instead of typical exams and grading. Singapore has cancelled tests for young children. The world is moving in this direction, it’s only a matter of time until this becomes mainstream. It still matters, however, when we take the decision to stop grading.
