Vedic astrology pays attention to nine grahas, which are collectively referred to as the navagrahas, with nava meaning nine. They include the sun (Surya), moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangala), Mercury (Budha), Jupiter (Brihaspati), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), Rahu (north node of the moon), and Ketu (south node of the moon). Rahu and Ketu are subtle grahas with no actual mass. They represent the two points in space where the orbital path of the sun and moon intersect. Because eclipses block light and occur in connection to the nodes, Rahu and Ketu are often called “shadow planets,” and are generally indicators of negative influences. According to the Vedas, each graha represents a particular aspect of life, and each is under the jurisdiction of a particular deity. Just as Jeff Bezos is the personality behind Amazon and Elon Musk is the personality behind Tesla — companies which are distinct for having certain qualities and providing certain services, there are personalities behind grahas, which are distinct for delivering and maintaining the different conditions of an individual’s life. Navagraha Part 1 About Grahas, Graha Shanti I will do a series on the Grahas for the next few days. For life events like marriage or pujas like Satyanarayana Puja we have a Graha Shanti Puja or Navagraha Puja. Astrologers sometimes suggest a Navagraha Puja for some challenging issues in the horoscope. I will share details on what a Graha is and why we do these pujas. Grahas are celestial influences that impact people’s lives. They are not all planets. These are Sun - Surya, Moon- Chandra, Mercury - Bhudha, Mars - Angaraka, Jupiter - Bruhaspati or Guru, Venus - Shukra and Saturn - Shani and Rahu and Ketu the north and south nodes of the moon which are the points where the moon and the earth’s orbit intersect. The word Graha comes from Grunhati which means one that takes or influences. In a horoscope, the Grahas have different placements based on the place and time of birth and astrologers use that to predict the future. Having a balanced energy of the Grahas is considered important for a peaceful life. A Graha Shanti or Navagraha Puja is done to pray to all the Grahas to be at peace and bless the event. Going around 9 that is doing a pradakshina times in any Navagraha Shrine especially on Saturday is considered very impactful. Worshiping Shiva ji and Hanuman ji also appeases the Grahas.
