Simultaneously intruded granitic and dioritic magmas! The contact between the 570 million year old Cobo Granite, and the Bordeaux Diorite, in NW Guernsey, is not simple! The contact can be sharp, maybe planar or crenulated into each other, or diffuse, or sometimes pocked with xenoliths of each other within, all implying these two mineralogically-different magmas were intruded at the same time! Recently we were asked to provide assistance in #decompaction of an #elm #tree in #Melbourne. The plot had been driven over by developers many times and the granitic sand had formed a crust. #Airspade was too loud and dusty, #hydrovac would have done too much damage. Using a rotary hammer drill and chisel we removed the sand crust. Then with the soil auger we drilled holes to 300-400mm depth. Because the auger tip is not 'Sharp', it didn't penetrate tree roots. The site was then backfilled. Job well done, hopefully #water and #oxygen can make it down to the #roots come spring.

My phone died and overheated at the end of this so apologies 😅. I’ll explain here below what’s happened. So basically that granitic batholith that’s around Jurassic/cretaceous in age was once exposed at the surface through uplift. Early in the cenozoic the batholith was compressed and bent downwards to form a basin. Further compression, uplift and extension have folded these rocks in certain areas which can be seen at the surface where you find synclines and anticlines. #geology #geologist #scottishgeologist

"Like geology with Bob Ross" Rocks can be color by numbers too. It's always as simple as colors and shapes. For object 1 to be cut by object 2, it has to exist first. You have to bake the cake before you can slice it. Such is the law of cross cutting relationships. The full sequence is as follows: 1 intrusion of granitic rock as magma. This cools into the grey rock 2.5 billion years ago. 2 extension (stretching) causes vertical fractures to form in the rock. They fill with magma which cools into the black rock. This was 800-900 million years ago. 3 the whole shape is eroded flat. 4 the landscape is flooded and sand is deposited on top of it, 500 million years ago. 5 it is buried by more sediment so deeply it turns into rock 6 it is again uplifted and eroded into its present shape, starting 16 million years ago. The arch of Cabo San Lucas is a distinctive granitic rock formation at the southern tip of Cabo San Lucas, which is itself the extreme southern end of Mexico's Baja California, peninsula. The arch is locally known as "El Arco," which means "the arch" in Spanish, or "Land's End." This was my spring 2025 vacation trip on the Koningsdam Holland America Cruise ship that was so much fun.
