Here’s a fun first day of school activity that helps you get to know more about students AND do some math!! Students create the net of a cube by graphing points and answering questions about themselves. Then they cut it out and make a 3D cube!!! Mornings were never my favorite. I would put on the TV to get a chance to wake up. But, I noticed that when we turned it off, we all walked in circles, unsure how to jump into play. It wasn’t working. I started setting up simple play prompts the night before. Since I am a busy mom, too, I keep the setups to less than five minutes. Here’s what my then-four-year-old is working on: GRAPH THE BEARS: This preschool activity is an introduction to sorting, graphing, and counting. ‼️WHAT IF MY CHILD DOESN’T DO WHAT THEY ARE “SUPPOSED TO DO?” As my child plays, I pay attention to his cues. This graphing activity aims to sort the colors into each graph section. ⚠️What my preschooler wanted to do first was create patterns. This independence puts me at a crossroads. I can either: ✅Redirect and ask him to put the bears on the graph and how they go. ✅Allow my preschooler to take the lead and watch where he heads. ➡️Children need time to be introduced to ideas, go in their own direction, and revisit to build upon skills. Let me tell you necessity is truly the mother of innovation here. As a former preschool teacher and current mother, I always find myself lacking enough time to prep all the things I want to do. So, the need for quick and easy solutions made me think of this way to create a simple graphing activity. If I were to create this in a fancy way I could also take pictures of whatever loose part or counter that I wanted to use and then put it into Canva to make a graph.
