A lone gray wolf has officially crossed into Nevada 🐺 According to the Nevada Department of Wildlife, the wolf was spotted after traveling east from Truckee, California. Wildlife officials say he’s a dispersing wolf — typically a young male leaving his pack to find new territory and eventually a mate. Wolves haven’t been commonly seen in Nevada for over a century, with the last confirmed resident wolves dating back to 1922. In fact, earlier reports of wolves in 2024 turned out to be coyotes after DNA testing. This new visitor, however, is the real deal and is believed to be from California’s Harvey Pack, a pack that has successfully produced pups since 2023. Today, California tracks 10 established wolf packs, a remarkable comeback for a species that once nearly vanished from the lower 48 states. Federal protections in the 1970s helped gray wolves rebound from an estimated 600 individuals nationwide. While Nevada officials say wolves usually just pass through remote areas, their movements are a powerful reminder of how wildlife doesn’t recognize state lines — and how recovery efforts in one region can ripple into another. California even maintains a public GPS tracker for wolves, and both states are now coordinating updates as this traveler continues his journey. A single wolf on the move might seem small, but it’s another sign of an evolving story of resilience, coexistence, and the ongoing conversation about the future of wolves in the American West. 🐾 #GrayWolf #WolfWatch #WildlifeRecovery #NevadaWildlife #WolvesOfTheWest

A member of the Wapiti Lake wolf pack as she crosses the road to join her pack on a carcass by the river. Pronounced (wop-uh-tee), in some Algonquian languages “Wapi” this means “white” and often refers to the white rump and is the traditional name for Elk. As wolves age their fur often grays out; black wolves become more salt and pepper and gray wolves gray even more. Common coat colors in Gray Wolves in North America are gray, black and a tawny combination; so this all white coloring is a rare color morph for gray wolves in the Rockies. All wolves are special — but this one is something. Before the Wapiti Lake pack, there were a couple different wolf packs in this territory each of which shared some wolves displaying an all white coat. First there was the Hayden Valley Pack. The breeding female of that pack was 540F, her coat was completely white. Then between 2005-2017 there was White Lady, as they called her, of the Canyon Pack. Followed by a daughter of White Lady and breeding female of the Wapiti Lake Pack between 2010-2021. Then there was the white wolf in this video. Should she be who I suspect her to be, she would be a 4th generation white wolf and granddaughter of 540F. Without any genetic testing we can’t know for sure but I really like the odds of likelihood in this situation. And thanks to @yellowstoneleo for all the insights on this wolf and the many in the Yellowstone Wolf Family Tree. #yellowstone #yellowstonewolves #graywolf

Snow this deep usually means silence. But not tonight. Somewhere in the forest, a pack is moving… together, focused, patient. 🐺❄️ Wolves don’t rush. They read the land, the wind, the smallest sound in the trees. And when they move like this, it usually means something is about to happen. Imagine running into this in the middle of the woods. No fences. No distance. Just you… and the pack. What would you do in that moment? #wolfpack #wolves #wildlife #nature #predator #wildanimals #snowforest #animalencounter #caughtoncamera #naturelovers

Wolf Series: Part 2: Wolf life Wolves are a highly social complex mammals just like humans! In this video I’m only able to scratch the surface on all the dynamics that make up what a wolf is, what they eat, how they take prey, how they are family oriented, how pack dynamics work and more. Being able to observe and importantly study wolves in the Greater Yellowstone is truly something special. It has been the honor of my life to show many people over the years their first ever wild wolves. Have you ever been one of these people? Have you ever seen wolves in the wild in the GYE? Have you ever seen wolves anywhere else? Let me know! Clearly I do enjoy the telling of a real good wolf story! 🙏🏼 A huge shoutout to @taylorlrabe for sharing some of the amazing wolf footage on this one. The shots of wolves hunting bison and the two packs of wolves getting scrappy with each other are hers! 🙏🏼 #wolves #🐺 #yellowstone

Grey wolves in Canada are the largest members of the dog family and are found in forests, tundras, and mountains across the country. They live and hunt in packs, which helps them take down large prey like deer and moose. Grey wolves are highly social animals with strong family bonds. Howling is one of their most iconic behaviors. Wolves howl to communicate with other pack members, mark their territory, and coordinate hunting. The sound can carry for miles and is often a haunting, beautiful part of Canada’s wilderness. These wolves make a nap in the snow look so cozy! This Yellowstone National Park pack was captured on video lying in some fresh powder, relaxing in the winter sun.  Did you know? Wolves have two layers of fur. Guard hairs are the outer layer, protecting from wind, rain and snow. The undercoat is the second layer. It’s thick and soft, providing insulation. Blood vessels in their toes help regulate temperature, keeping their paws warm in frigid conditions. These adaptions allow wolves to live in conditions 40 degrees below zero, according to the Wolf Education & Research Center. 🎥: Center for Biological Diversity #nationalparknews

You’ll hear some Montana residents say there are too many wolves in their area. Others will tell you they don’t have a wolf problem at all — and that elk and deer populations are doing just fine. The reality? About a quarter of the state holds the majority of the wolf population. The rest of the state isn’t experiencing the same challenges. Just because one region isn’t seeing impacts doesn’t mean another region isn’t. If we can come together and acknowledge that different areas are facing different realities, we can have a more productive conversation about managing wolf numbers responsibly. I’d love to hear your experiences with wolves — share your stories below. 👇 #wolves #montana #bozeman #wildlife #backcountry

The Ghost of Summers Past. Sound on. A few years back, I had a couple encounters with a ghost-white wolf at McNeil River in Alaska. It’s still one of my favorite wildlife moments ever. This wolf came down from the bluff where this clip was filmed, and it walked within about 30 meters of me before, like a ghost, it disappeared.

The gray wolf once roamed almost every part of the United States, from the forests of New England to the deserts of the Southwest. For centuries, wolves played a critical role in keeping nature balanced by controlling deer and elk populations. But by the early 1900s, wolves were hunted nearly to extinction in the U.S., driven by fear, myths, and government bounties. By 1974, fewer than 300 wolves remained in the entire lower 48 states. Then something extraordinary happened. Wolves were protected under the Endangered Species Act, and in 1995, they were reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park. What followed shocked scientists and changed how the world understands nature. After wolves returned: Elk stopped overgrazing riverbanks Trees like willow and aspen grew back Rivers changed shape and became more stable Beavers, birds, fish, and insects returned This chain reaction is known as a trophic cascade, and it proved that one animal can reshape an entire ecosystem. Today, the gray wolf is one of the most powerful symbols of American wildlife recovery and environmental science. Its story is taught in U.S. schools and documentaries as proof that conservation works — and that nature can heal when given a chance.
