The Ford Zakspeed Turbo Capri was one of the most extreme machines of the Group 5 “silhouette” era. Developed by Zakspeed for the DRM, it featured radical wide-body aerodynamics, massive rear wing and a highly advanced turbocharged 1.4-liter engine producing well over 500 horsepower in race trim. Despite its small displacement, the turbo power delivery was explosive, making it a fierce rival to Porsche and BMW in late-1970s German touring car racing. Loud, aggressive and technically innovative, the Zakspeed Turbo Capri remains a symbol of peak Group 5 excess.

I’ve been watching some old 1982 Super Silhouette races from Fuji and honestly this era is just insane. The cars look like normal road cars at first glance, but then you realize they’re basically Group 5 monsters underneath. Massive fenders, huge wings, ridiculous turbo setups and flames everywhere. The Tomica Skyline DR30 is obviously one of the most iconic cars from that time. The red Tomica livery, huge boxy overfenders and that angry turbo four-cylinder just make it look perfect. It’s probably the first car that pops into most people’s heads when they think about Super Silhouette. But the race also had something unexpected on the grid: a BMW M1. A proper Group 5 machine from Europe, built by Schnitzer, mid-engine and looking completely different compared to the Japanese cars. And somehow that’s the car that actually won the race. Japanese turbo silhouettes everywhere… and then a BMW M1 just takes the win at Fuji. Early 80s racing was wild. #SuperSilhouette #FujiSpeedway #TomicaSkyline #BMWM1 #Group5

BMW E21 Group 5 Tube chassis project is coming along quickly! I've still been trying my best to get as much content as I can but I sometimes forget 😅. I was able to finish fabbing up the transmission bracket, front tubing for the body, and almost all of the hand bead rolled 18-22 gauge sheet metal for the interior which were all tig welded in with the help of @d.b.fabrications #bmw #turbo #cars #m3 #e21 #30 #fab #e46 #race #320i #group5 #tubechassis #welding #bmwm #bmwmotorsport
