The truth about “engagement strategies”? They fail without a framework. ❌ We’ve all been there: You hand out the Talking Chips, but the room is still chaotic, or only one person is actually talking. That’s because the chips aren’t the solution—they’re just the final step. To get 100% participation, or at least an approximation, I layer these 4 hidden systems: 1️⃣ The Brain Primer: A targeted Bell Ringer to bridge the gap from the hallway to the lesson. 2️⃣ The Atmosphere: My Classroom Screen isn’t just for looks. It sets the tone with lo-fi beats, work signal gestures, and a visual sound leveler so they know the volume expectation without me saying a word. 3️⃣ The Rotation: Layering Talking Chips with Quiz-Quiz-Trade or Gamified Collab so the “who speaks when” is never a guessing game. The chips are the tool, but the system is the engine. ⚙️ Stick around for when I show you the exact templates I use to start class on autopilot. 🔔 #teachertips #classroommanagement #talkingchips #engagementstrategies #teacherlife

I love incorporating codes and ciphers into my curriculum for advanced middle school students! Here is a fun and engaging way to get students deciphering their first message and wanting more. This activity is "brains-on & devices-off". You can change the A1-Z26 intro phrase to something that your students will find intriguing and that is connected to your curriculum. Lean into the fun mystery along with them and cheer them on as they figure it out on scratch paper or whiteboards. 🕵 Once they are hooked they can invent their own class ciphers and write you and each other secret messages! #gifted #middleschool #ciphers #teachersofinstagram

One small win from learning AI this week 👇 I used it to draft a Grade 3 fractions lesson—learning goals, activities, and an exit ticket in minutes. I still tweak everything. I still apply my professional judgment. But starting with a rough draft instead of a blank page is huge. Want the exact prompt? Comment FRACTIONS 👇

Another amazing premade template inside the Explain Everything Whiteboard that you have to check out — it’s called Estimating & Measuring, and it’s such a classroom win! Start by using the built‑in Google Image Search to pull in anything you want students to measure… the Eiffel Tower, a shark, a football player — anything goes! 🌍🔍 Then tap into the math manipulatives and choose the ruler. Students first make their estimate, record it right on the template, and then use the ruler to find the actual measurement. It’s visual, interactive, and incredibly easy to use — perfect for whole‑group lessons, small‑group instruction, or even independent center work. 🙌💡 If you haven’t explored this template yet, definitely go check it out. It’s one of those simple tools that instantly boosts engagement and hands‑on learning!

I used to think random grouping was fair—everyone had an equal chance. What actually happened? All the high-achievers grouped together, all the struggling students together, or personality conflicts destroyed collaboration. So I started forming groups strategically—each group had someone who could move work forward, someone who needed support but would engage, and I avoided pairing students who'd distract each other. This wasn't tracking—it was balancing. Random groups almost never work in middle school. #groupwork #classroommanagement #middleschool #teachingtips #scienceteacher
