When thinking about doing a down/back block, there are a couple things I want you to think about 1.) Pre-snap, imagine your defender is almost trapped in the corner of a room. The only way out for him is straight up the field. If I had a wall blocking his path going forward, he would be completely trapped and couldn’t go anywhere. What could be that wall in front? The path/angle your first step makes 2.) Once I get my hips set on the angle and my foot making that “wall” in front, I want to close space as fast as possible BUT without choppy footwork UNTIL I get latched on. I want to get to his near V of the neck FAST but once I latch on thats when our foot fire can speed up One thing to note: We NEED to fly out onto this angle and understand that the faster we get latched on our ability to cover the over the top move skyrockets. YES, sometimes he will be able to go over the top right at the snap, but you still need to let it fly.
