Caring for a loved one with dementia is a challenging journey that many of us may face. Recently, I became my mother’s primary caregiver after a series of incidents that highlighted her need for constant support. It all began when she accidentally locked herself in the bathroom, and smoke was coming from her apartment. This led to a hospital evaluation where we discovered she had brain bleeding and was progressing through dementia stages. After hospital stays, rehab, and nursing home experiences, she had multiple emergency room visits and broke both hips. Eventually, I decided to bring her into my home, which has had a significant impact on my life and work. Balancing caregiving with personal and professional responsibilities is tough, and I constantly remind myself of the importance of self-care. Advocacy is crucial, especially when dealing with nursing homes. If the need arises to move her back, I’ll ensure there’s a strong advocacy system in place, possibly involving an independent social worker or advocacy group. This ensures her well-being and provides peace of mind. To everyone in similar situations, remember to take care of yourself and seek support when needed. You’re not alone in this journey.
