Rodents’ incisors grow throughout their lives. In rats, they grow up to 2–3 mm per week, and in guinea pigs and degus, even faster. If the teeth are not worn down, the bite changes, mucosal injuries and infections appear, and the animal refuses to eat. Gnawing is primarily a physiological regulation. But that’s not all there is to it. In nature, rodents spend hours processing material: bark, roots, seeds, dense fibres. This is part of their survival strategy — accessing food, building burrows, marking their territory. When gnawing, the orientational-exploratory system is activated: dopamine maintains interest, and repetitive movements stabilise arousal. The rhythmic work of the jaws reduces the level of background anxiety through parasympathetic activation. This is a physical way of processing tension. When a rodent is unable to gnaw, the energy of searching does not disappear. It shifts into stereotypical behaviour: endless running in circles, gnawing on cage bars, plucking fur. Behaviour becomes narrow and repetitive because the basic programme has no outlet. Gnawing is not a «bad habit.» It is a structuring activity through which the animal regulates its body and psyche.
