Gut string good choice Right now, I’m getting to know this instrument’s personality — checking tensions, distances, and every little detail. An old violin is always a blend of many souls, and this one is no exception. Today I had quite a surprise after a long session of adjustments. I first tried Larsen Il Cannone strings, but the violin rejected them right away — too aggressive, too bright. Then I went for Evah Pirazzi and PI, but they didn’t feel right either. The sound became strident and lost its finesse. Finally, I switched to Dominant strings, and everything started to make sense again — the instrument opened up, warmer, more balanced. Then I thought: why not try a gut D string? Every time I released the tension on that string, the violin’s voice felt fuller and freer… so I went for it. And wowww what a change! It was like the violin suddenly remembered who it once was. I’m still working on the final touches before showing the photos of the finished result, but I had to share this magical moment. And just to be clear — I’m not a violinist, I just try to play this beautiful instrument whenever I can.

The guitar is since sold, but we couldn’t help but share this wondering video of the great Jerron Paxton @jerron_paxton on our rare 1917 Ditson Style 11 Parlor guitar, made by C.F. Martin! In the 1910’s The Oliver Ditson company of New York and Boston was one of the C. F. Martin Company’s largest dealers. Harry L. Hunt was manager of Ditson’s New York branch and a fretted instrument sales specialist. Hunt was one of the people Martin was most keen to solicit for advice on what the public wanted, as they worked update their product lines beyond the gut string “parlor” guitars they had always specialized in. In 1916, Hunt officially contracted C. F. Martin & Co. to build a special line of guitars and ukuleles branded with the Ditson name.
