We love this invisible ink recipe because it uses just 3 household ingredients, the results are instant and striking, it’s our favourite combination of nature/science/art/magic, and it’s child friendly (non toxic, no heat required). Method: To make the golden reveal potion, mix turmeric powder into some hand sanitiser or rubbing alcohol (around 1/4 tsp is plenty in around 2 tablespoons of the sanitiser). Note: please keep in mind that turmeric can leave stains and protect all surfaces accordingly. To make the invisible ink, mix around 1 tbsp bicarbonate or baking soda in 1/2 cup water. Write or draw your message on paper using the invisible ink and a paintbrush/fingers/cotton bud etc. Important: allow it to dry completely, minimum 15 minutes. Now use the turmeric potion for the reveal! We love designing treasure hunts, secret codes and dragon quests using this golden magic. The science: Curcumin, the compound that gives turmeric its golden colour, is a natural pH indicator (like my good friend purple cabbage), which means it can be used to identify acids and bases. Molecularly speaking, acids are inclined to be hydrogen givers and bases to be hydrogen takers. Bicarb soda is a base. In the presence of turmeric, it takes a hydrogen away from the curcumin. This missing hydrogen creates a subtle change in its chemical structure so that it now absorbs different wavelengths of light. This is what causes the striking change from yellow to red! Turmeric contains curcumin, a compound that’s photosensitive—meaning it changes when exposed to sunlight. The leaves block the light, leaving behind beautiful silhouettes. And when you spray with baking soda water, the pH change turns the print from bright yellow to a deep red-orange! Such a fun way for kids to explore chemistry, light, and creativity all in one! A quick word of advice though, turmeric stains! Hands, clothes, surfaces… So put the kids in old clothes and either cover the area or take the fun outside!
