From the moment I can remember myself I have been picking at my cuticles until they bleed. I used to have a lot of shame around this obsessive habit, as I would always get comments from my father that I have to stop doing it. I thought that something was wrong with me for doing this. A deep sense of shame has grown around this habit, until.I found out that my habit has a name 📛 Dermatillomania or Skin picking is a rarely discussed condition often linked to anxiety and depression. It is characterized by repetitive and compulsive picking of the skin. People with the disorder continue the behavior to the point of bleeding or bruising but cannot stop it. Skin picking is often used as a way to cope with anxiety or stress and may be a sign of a compulsive condition, such as OCD( obsessive-compulsive disorder). I have tried for over 35 years to replace this habit of skin picking on my cuticles but turned out it would need to produce a strong physical sensation bordering on pain, not just keep my hands busy. I tired manicure 💅 but in 2 days I am back at it. I tried fidget toys but- it did not help I tried putting a bitter nail polish - did not help. Eventually I discovered that this was just a symptom, a way for my body of communicating with me. I had so much unresolved shame, grief, anxiety and pain stored in my system that my body could not hold it anymore.
