Handwritingis a complex task involving fine/visualmotor, hand strength, grasping, visuo-spatial, posture, balance &attention skills. It can be a difficult task & a common referral in #paediatrics. We were referred to an OT for support & I am sharing tips we picked up to improve writing! . 𝑰𝒎𝒑𝒓𝒐𝒗𝒆 𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒕𝒉/ 𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒖𝒂𝒍 𝒅𝒆𝒙𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒚 Weak hand muscles can fatigue when writing&manifest as pain, switching hand, strain  & refusal to write. Fine motor tasks such as playing with Theraputty, play doh or colouring, increase strength and improve manual dexterity . 𝑫𝒐 𝒂 𝒘𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒏 𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒄𝒌𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒕 A written checklist/visual reminder of what good posture and functional pencil grasp look like can be laminated and taped to the desk . 𝑮𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝑺𝒊𝒕𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑷𝒐𝒔𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 A good sitting posture when writing increases stability, concentration & writing ability. Ideally both desk  & chair should be height adjustable. We use from @booricollections which is adjustable* and has made a HUGE difference to our boys. They sit more comfortably and focus better. Desk posture should follow the “90-90-90° rule: Feet should rest flat at 90°to ankles. Knees at a 90° & about 1-2 inches away from seat of the chair. Hips should be at the back of their chair & positioned at a 90°. A sloping board can support development of optimal writing posture/pencil grasp . 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒕𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒕 𝑮𝒓𝒂𝒔𝒑 Developing a correct pencil grasp is a natural process involving manual dexterity, in hand manipulation skills,hand strength, etc. Using a short thick pencil (no more than 2cm) encourages dynamic finger movements; practicing on vertical surfaces and/or holding a small object in the palm of the hand with 4th and 5th finger encourages a tripod grasp, a rubber band around the pencil can be used to indicate where to hold the pencil. A pencil grip can help if the above strategies do not help. Remember that some adapted grasps may still be appropriate and functional for a child .
