It’s not your body… it’s just the length of your jeans. Petites hear this advice all the time: “Show your ankles to look taller.” But that rule doesn’t always work. In this video, the jeans on the left were hemmed into more of a cropped style. I love them with ballet flats, but when I wear them with tennis shoes they completely cut off my proportions and shorten my leg line. The jeans on the right were hemmed longer for boots. They still work with shoes, but where they really shine is with boots. Because the hem is longer, the visual line of the leg continues downward, which naturally makes my legs look longer. So instead of focusing on always showing your ankles, pay attention to where the hemline hits your shoe. Sometimes a slightly longer jean actually elongates your frame much more than a cropped one. I finally picked up my jeans from alterations. I found them in my closet and they were too long (and didn’t fit last time I tried them on. But they fit now so I wanted to get them hemmed) And before I even tried them on, I could feel it that tightness in my chest. That familiar wave of thoughts about my legs. The shame I feel with my body. About how my body looks in pants. It’s wild how something so ordinary can feel so big. I stood there for a minute just holding them. Arguing with myself. Wanting to put them down. Because jeans are hard for me. The way they cling. The way they highlight the parts of my body I still struggle with. But I want to wear jeans. I don’t want fear to decide what I get to wear. So I put them on. My heart was racing. I looked in the mirror. And no , I didn’t suddenly love everything I saw. But they fit. And instead of tearing them off and changing into something “safer,” I stayed in them. I took a breath. I let the uncomfortable thoughts exist without letting them control me. That felt like a win. Not because I felt confident. Not because I loved my reflection. But because I didn’t run. This is what doing hard things looks like for me right now. It’s quiet. It’s internal. It’s deeply personal. And maybe for someone else, it’s just a pair of jeans. But for me, it’s choosing to live in my body even when it feels uncomfortable. If there’s something hanging in your closet that feels heavy or scary… this is your reminder that you’re allowed to try. You’re allowed to breathe through it. You’re allowed to wear the jeans. Even if your heart races. Even if the thoughts get loud. Even if it’s hard. 🩷
