It’s Prom season, hemming formal dresses isn’t too bad if you know a few tricks: 👗 Always have your model try the dress on first, wearing the shoes they plan to wear with it. Then mark your hem. 💃 Measure twice, cut once (with sharp scissors!) 👗 When trimming the bottom of the dress, never cut straight across, follow the curve all the way around using a seam gauge to accurately mark. 💃 If you are working with snaggy or delicate material, use clips instead of pins. 👗 Whenever pressing the dress with an iron, always check your temperature. Heat test on a piece of scrap fabric first before hitting the dress. The last thing you want to do is scorch your beautiful formal dress right before the dance. 💃 Go slow and take your time, never pull or stretch at the hem when you’re stitching in place, that can cause wierd wavey ruffling or puckering. 👗 If you are hemming a lining as well, make sure it is shorter than the dress hem, you don’t want that part sticking out the bottom. 💃 Another fun thing you can do is use the dress scraps. Make a hair scrunchie or accent bow, or even shoulder straps with the extra material. 👗 Give one last iron press before wearing. Wavy hems when sewing jersey? Try an adhesive hemming tape (like Wonder Tape) to help prevent puckers and fabric creep. I love this stuff! Stick it to the edge of the hem, peel off the backing, turn the hem up and topstitch away. It creates a neat result, and comes out in the first wash so doesn’t feel stiff.
