How to Train Your Dragon is an animated adventure film produced by DreamWorks Animation. The story takes place in the Viking village of Berk, where fighting dragons is a normal way of life. The film follows a young Viking named Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, the son of the village chief Stoick the Vast. Unlike the other Vikings who are strong and fearless dragon fighters, Hiccup is smaller, thoughtful, and often seen as weak because he struggles to live up to the expectations of his people. During a dragon attack on the village, Hiccup manages to shoot down a rare dragon known as a Night Fury. When he finds the injured dragon in the forest, he cannot bring himself to kill it and instead sets it free. Over time, he forms a close bond with the dragon and names it Toothless. Through his friendship with Toothless, Hiccup begins to understand that dragons are not the dangerous monsters the Vikings believe them to be, but intelligent and emotional creatures capable of loyalty and friendship. As Hiccup secretly learns more about dragons from Toothless, he uses this knowledge during dragon training in the village, surprising everyone by calming and controlling dragons without hurting them. Eventually, the truth about dragons is revealed when Hiccup and Toothless help defeat a much larger and more dangerous dragon threatening both humans and dragons. Their bravery changes the beliefs of the Vikings, leading to peace between the two species. There are some horrendous beliefs in this documentary. �The kind that make you stop and go, “what the hell did I just hear?” And because of that, this one gets missed. Not because it’s good.�Not because it makes sense. But because it doesn’t sound as extreme. I’m not even arguing that no one wants that kind of dynamic. �For some people, that might feel right—and that’s fine. The problem is presenting it like it’s the only answer…�and then getting mad when it’s not. This whole thing reminds me of this dynamic. Imagine this: Your favourite flowers are tulips. �But your partner keeps bringing you daisies. And you appreciate the daisies. You really do! But one day you say, “Hey, I actually love tulips.” And the response is: �“Why can’t you just be grateful for the daisies?” That’s the vibe. Women are told what we want. Men act on it. Someone said to me today, “I drank last night and I feel absolutely horrendous.” That got me thinking about day counting. For some people, counting days works really well. It can be motivating. You look at it and say, I’m one day sober, one week sober, one month sober, one year sober. You can see the progress building and it reinforces the decision to stay alcohol free. But there is another side to it. If someone has been sober for six months and then has a drink, the day counter suddenly goes back to zero. And that can make people feel like they have failed. They beat themselves up and think all the progress has disappeared. But it hasn’t. If you had one drink in six months, the bigger truth is that you were sober for almost all of that time. That is still a huge change in your relationship with alcohol. Behaviour change science shows that lasting change rarely happens in a perfectly straight line. The brain is rewiring habits that may have been in place for years. During that process there can be setbacks, adjustments and learning moments. The problem is when people see one slip as total failure. That thinking often pushes them straight back into regular drinking. The solution is to look at the bigger picture. Progress is still progress, even if it is not perfect. Sobriety is not about being flawless. It is about gradually building a life where alcohol plays less and less of a role.
