🐢 The most dangerous thing for a tortoise is flipping and not finding a way to right herself! Why? I often get asked “will a tortoise make a good pet for my child?” My answer to that question is no, unless YOU are willing to take over the daily responsibilities. Small tortoises especially need daily soaks in warm water, a variety of fresh greens (no lettuce or spinach) calcium & vitamin supplements, and a very particular environment with the right temps, humidity, and UVB. They are incredibly prone to a metabolic bone disease that causes their shells to pyramid (which is very painful and even lethal) if these requirements are not met in their early years of life. They are also very prone to upper respiratory infections and if not treated by an exotic vet $$$ far too often causes our little friends to pass way before their time. Young tortoises are not easy pets, but if you understand their care and are committed to them they make for AMAZING scaley friends. If you answered no to any of these question then you should NOT get a tortoise. 🚫🐢 Tortoises are such a huge commitment. They grow to be SO big and need a lot of outdoor space to roam (Fig will weigh 50-80lbs one day.) They are VERY sensitive to temperature, humidity levels, lighting in general & easily develop health issues if any of these aren’t perfect especially while they’re young. Some species are known to dig deep 15ft burrows underground and can do it to your house, fences, etc. They need a salad the size of their shell everyday so once they do get large that’s A LOTTTT of food!
