High jump physics are freaking nuts: one of my all time favorites to watch, Torra Harris illustrates what should happen in HJ so well.. ROLLING/FRONT FLIPPING OVER THE BAR!!!! THIS AUTOMATICALLY SHOWS YOU IF YOU HAVE SOMERSAULT. High jump is a TWISTING acrobatic event, and this is where most basketball players absolutely blow and can’t succeed in the event, myself included. TO GENERATE LIFT AND SOMERSAULT You MUST generate force extremely fast, and a lot of it. This is one of the only ways you can gain as much somersault as Torra does in this video. To do this, it is common practice to almost “chop” the run in the curve to get a very short and fast takeoff action that results in a high arching jump with a lot of somersaulting. If you have very good dynamic leg strength, this works very well, as the ground contact time is really short. This is especially evident in the low bar somersault jump, where you can visibly see Torra flip FORWARDS over the bar. This decreases his lift but can be great for teaching athletes what somersault feels like and ultimately how important it is at big bars. What is also INSANE is how he manipulates two variables to open up and create the top position over the bar! Watch the progression of the jumps and see if you can identify what he does differently. #biomechanics #sprinting #sprint #physiology #trackandfield #tracknation #100mdash #200mdash #centralnervoussystem #hipextension #strength #power #acceleration #sprintmechanics #basketball #highjump #slamdunk #nike #polevault #triplejump #highjumping #altis #athletics #hurdlenation #hurdling #hurdle #depthjump #basketball

Read caption!🙌🏼 - 1. Don’t worry so much about the “form over the bar.” The approach is 10x more important! 2. Wanna make clear progress? Training helps yes but… progress is made with proper SLEEP/HYDRATION/NUTRITION/RECOVERY! 3. Don’t compared yourself to other jumpers/marks/records/standards etc… it’ll just affect your mental going into meets/college. You are your own jumper, on your own path to success! You never know what can happen if you just trust YOUR training! Bonus tip: HAVE FUN!, find ways to enjoy the event. Chances are, when your feelings/thoughts are positive, practices and meets will have better results! Any questions? 🛫 High Jump Drills🛬 A few high jump drills from yesterday before we worked on our approach. Parachutes are a great confidence builder for kids who don’t naturally enjoy going upside down—they also build air and body control awareness. Shoulder falls follow the same concept, helping with confidence and introducing the sensation of going inverted at low speed. U-runs- the main focus was keeping the athlete from stepping toward the mat. Instead, they needed to stay in a leaned position and run out of the jump zone. If they drifted too far from the cones on the exit, it showed they didn’t maintain lean on the curve. Great videos for recognizing both correct execution and what needs fixing. Easy for the athlete to see the error and understand what is being cued. Finally, to wrap up the warm-up, they did a scissor kick with the focus on staying close to the cones and avoiding steps toward the mat. Four simple drills that give quality coaching time while reinforcing the cues you want to see in a full jump. . . . . . #trackandfield #training #athlete #coach #jump #vertical #vertical #tips #drills #coaching

3 crucial high jump tips: 1) don’t start the curve late - this is an easy one to miss as a lot of athletes don’t start their curve soon enough and run too wide of a curve. They end up running parallel to the crossbar and landing down along the bar. So stay in your curve! 2) the penultimate (last two steps) should be quick - you can tell if an athlete is gathering energy at the end if there last two steps are slow and long or drawn out. Keep running off the jump foot or you will always loose energy at takeoff! 3) don’t start the jump before you take off the ground - we see so many athletes doing this (it’s still a bad habit I have to work on too). Your body position at take off should be squared off facing the back corner of the high jump pit, head to toe - not leaning or turning towards the bar. Athletes like to turn their head, shoulders, arms or feet in prep for the jump before even leaving the ground because they are wanting to clear the bar too quick. The goal is to stay leaning into the curve and away from the bar at take off to allow enough time to get your full potential jump off the ground. I hope this helps!! #athlete #highjumper #highjump #highjumping #jump #trackandfield #track #field #professionalathlete
