🌪️ High Jump Rotation Drills 🌪️ Two drills we use to simulate how rotation works in the high jump flop. Instead of relying on a big kick, the emphasis is on air control and using the shoulders to lead the way. These drills aren’t instant fixes. Athletes can become very comfortable with static rotations, but once you add the complexity of an approach and everything that goes into a full jump, the result won’t match right away. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t drill it. Exposure is necessary, and the confidence they build from static posturing will pay off over the long term. Since really learning and understanding these concepts, I haven’t found a better way to introduce rotation to young jumpers. This is their first experience of how it should feel versus how they currently flop. Over time, that feel becomes second nature and transfers naturally into their approach work. The goal is for the athlete to no longer think about rotating but to trust the movement their body has learned. . . . . . #trackandfield #training #athlete #coach #jump #vertical #power #highjump #howto #coaching #tips #technique #rotation #flop #jumping

3 Important things Leaning Away From the Bar does ⬇️⬇️ -Leaning away allows the hips to travel past the foot and push the athlete up higher creating more vertical force. -Leaning the body away from the bar helps drive the hips upward and inward, becoming the highest point of the body’s arc. -The lean away from the bar helps the jumper rotate more smoothly over it, keeping their body controlled and tight. . . This is a very common mistake I see in high jump coaching — telling the athlete to be tall in their curve and into takeoff. This mistake should be intuitive if you’ve ever been told this and then felt like you can’t get a good jab into the ground at takeoff. When athletes are too tall into takeoff, it feels mushy and quick and then people will flail around in the air and rocket into the bar. In reality physics tell us to be LOW in our curve and into takeoff, and then tall at toeoff. After all, one of the main functions of the curve is to lower our center of mass. #highjump #trackandfield #athletics #educational #improvement

Top 8 High Jump Tips for Beginners!!👇 1. Your approach is everything. Should be around 8-10 steps. Draw out the curve with chalk to be consistent. Width is usually between 10-12 feet. 2. The energy & tempo of the approach should always build as you get to your jump. Your approach is starting too fast if it feels out of control. 3. Lean into the curve as you run it. The curve is the last 5 steps of the approach. One key takeaway that helped me when I felt like I was being pulled out of it and taking off too close to the standards was to start my curve sooner. 4. Your last two steps should be moving toward the back corner of the pit you are jumping towards, not parallel to the bar! This is crucial for a quick clearance and keeping momentum through your rotation over the bar. 5. Depending on how high you jump, your take off should reflect how far you are jumping from -> higher jumpers need more time to climb in the air before clearing the bar. 6. You should be leaning away from the bar at takeoff. I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH. Your approach will push you into the bar so there’s no need to jump into it on purpose! 7. Stay active in your jump & rotation over the bar. Knee and arms drive up first, shoulders and head will dip so hips drive up over the bar, and legs stay up to finish clearance. 8. Lastly, You should land deep in the middle of the pit, not near the standards or edge of the pit. Comment if you’ve tried any of these tips or if you have any questions! Part 3/3 in the High Jump series. Effortless bar clearance comes from what you do in the air. Drop your head and rotate. The idea of snapping is dumb, never snap just rotate and kick your feet up. 🛫High Jump training🛬 There is a lot of work going into solving the puzzle of turning Anna’s weakest events into her strengths. And part of that process is finding creative ways to work on her technique without over stressing her body with impacts. A full session of all mat drills, where everything is done on the mat is a first for me. If we can find a way to make her half step form translate to a full approach, she will clear 5’8 this year. Improving the baseline is very mundane work, but the fall allows for us to spend excess amounts of time being creative. . . . . #trackandfield #training #athlete #coach #jump #vertical #highjump #power #drills #tips

📏Leaning 📏 Many athletes experience difficulty maintaining proper lean during take-off. This is a common technical challenge that can affect overall efficiency and power transfer. To address this, the following posture-focused jump drill is great for learning how to keep a good posture throughout the jump. It is designed to promote vertical alignment and help the athlete maintain an upright position throughout the take-off phase. High jump is one of only two events in track and field that wears heel spikes. This is because of the nature of the takeoff, which requires the jumper to produce large amounts of horizontal braking force in order to convert some of their approach velocity into vertical velocity. The takeoff step in high jump is different than a sprinting takeoff in that it is a heel toe “rolling” contact rather than a midfoot contact. Because of this the heel spikes dig into the ground providing a more stable foot during takeoff. You may also notice the intense pronation of the foot in these videos. Most of the pronation is actually just the shoe bending, but the foot also does pronate quite a bit in high jump. This is because the direction of the foot at the takeoff in high jump is slightly more angulated outwards than the final path of the body’s center of mass at takeoff. This causes the foot to pronate and the arch to collapse, storing and releasing elastic energy through the foot as the plantar fascia stretches and recoils under tension. How to improve your long jump! These tips helped me go from jumping 18 feet to 24 feet 🐇 #longjump #longjumptips #jumpers #trackandfield

Jumpers always tell me, “everything is clearing the bar but my butt and I don’t know what to do.” Their go-to solution is “I just need to arch my back more.” WRONG. MOST COMMON SOLUTIONS Jump Higher You are just not jumping high enough so your peak is not high enough to clear the bar. (This is easier said than done, sometimes the jump is just not high enough) Stop Dropping The Hips You are dropping your hips too early as you kick you legs to try and finish the jump, and your glutes are coming down on the bar. Learn Rotation You may not have enough rotation, which is causing the lower half of your body to hit the bar. Rotation is generated through lean in the curve and body positions at takeoff. #highjump #highjumper #highjumpers #track #trackandfield #jumps #dontavioushill
