From a failed restoration to a global phenomenon. In 2012, Cecilia Giménez, an 81-year-old amateur painter, tried to restore a 100-year-old fresco of Jesus in her local church. With no professional training, the result was... well, not what she expected. The world called it “Potato Jesus,” and it became the laughingstock of the internet. But then, something magical happened. People didn’t just laugh-they came to see it. Thousands of tourists flocked to the small town of Borja, saving its economy and turning the “worst restoration in history” into its greatest attraction. #history #art #eccehomo #potatojesus

Did the Moon landing really happen… or is there more to the story? 🌕 While NASA’s 1969 Apollo 11 mission is celebrated as one of humanity’s greatest achievements, skeptics continue to raise questions: • Why did the American flag appear to wave, even though there’s no wind on the Moon? • Why weren’t stars visible in the footage from the lunar surface? • Why did astronauts’ jumps look lower than expected in weaker gravity? • Why don’t the famous footprints match Neil Armstrong’s space boots? Scientists have provided explanations for these mysteries but the doubts fuel one of the biggest conspiracy theories in history. Was it all real… or was it Hollywood’s greatest production? 👀 🎥 @williams.clue - if you like this clip you will LOVE the rest of his content. George Santayana (1863-1952) was a Spanish-American philosopher, essayist, poet, and novelist. Born in Madrid, he was educated in the United States and spent much of his career teaching at Harvard University. Santayana is best known for his works on philosophy, aesthetics, and culture, including The Life of Reason. He emphasized the importance of critical thinking and intellectual independence. Though deeply influenced by classical philosophy, he maintained a skeptical and naturalistic outlook. Later in life, he returned to Europe, living in Italy until his death. His writings continue to influence modern thought and education. Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was a renowned Russian novelist, philosopher, and social reformer, widely regarded as one of the greatest writers in world literature. He is best known for his epic novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, which explore human emotions, society, and morality. Born into aristocratic family, Tolstoy later adopted a simple, spiritual lifestyle and promoted nonviolence and truth. His ideas influenced figures like Mahatma Gandhi. Through his works and philosophy, Tolstoy left a lasting impact on literature, ethics, and social thought worldwide. The Zhaozhou Bridge in Hebei, China has been standing since 605 AD — through 10 major floods, 8 wars, and a 7.6 magnitude earthquake with its epicenter 40 kilometers away. ⠀ It is still in use today. 1,400 years later. ⠀ Engineer Li Chun built it during the Sui Dynasty using a design so far ahead of its time that Europe didn’t figure out the same concept until the 19th century. ⠀ The main arch spans 37 meters across the Xiao River in a shallow, flattened curve rather than a steep semicircle — making the road surface gentle enough for horses and carts to cross without slowing down. ⠀ But the real genius is the four small relief arches carved into the shoulders of the main arch on either side. ⠀ When the river floods and water pressure builds against the bridge, those openings let the flood pass straight through instead of hammering the structure. ⠀ They also cut the total weight of the bridge by 15% — removing 700 tons of unnecessary stone before a single cart ever crossed it. ⠀ The 28 limestone slabs forming the arch aren’t fused solid either. They’re locked together with iron dovetail clamps that let the arch flex and adjust as the ground shifts beneath it. ⠀ A Tang Dynasty official who inspected the bridge 70 years after it was built wrote: the four small arches break the anger of the roaring floods and protect the bridge mightily. ⠀ He was right. They still do. ⠀ Follow @explaining.architecturee for structures built to outlast everything 👇 ⠀ #architecture #engineering #ancientchina #bridges #history

143 years ago today, Karl Marx passed away. The German philosopher and economist helped reshape modern political thought through works like The Communist Manifesto and Das Kapital. His ideas on class struggle, labor, and capitalism influenced generations of political movements and debates across the world. In the film ‘A King in New York’, Charlie Chaplin poked fun at Cold War paranoia when a boy is questioned for reading Marx and responds, “Do I have to be a communist to read Karl Marx?” A reminder that ideas and curiosity often travel further than labels. Fun fact: Marx spent years studying and writing in the British Museum Reading Room, where much of Das Kapital was developed. Geobag placement is a common river engineering method used to reinforce shorelines and slow erosion. Crews fill large geotextile fabric bags with sand or dredged sediment, then position them in the water to form a heavy protective barrier. Over time, these bags help stabilize riverbanks and reduce damage from strong currents and seasonal flooding. These geotextile bags are designed to be tough and permeable, meaning they can hold the fill material while still allowing water to pass through. Once they settle, they act like a man made foundation that can support additional sediment buildup. This is why they are widely used in land reclamation and embankment protection projects. In this video, filmed in Sirajganj District, Bangladesh, the crew is using a barge to drop massive sediment filled geobags directly into the water along the shoreline. The explosive splash happens because each bag is extremely heavy and hits the surface with major force. It looks chaotic, but it is a controlled method of building up and protecting the riverbank.
