Proper Gear Wear a helmet, riding boots, and gloves. Always check tack and saddles for secure fitting. Stay Alert Horses are sensitive and can react quickly. Always be aware of your surroundings and the horse’s body language. Mounting & Dismounting Do it slowly and confidently. Never rush or make sudden movements near the horse. To be honest with you, when I started riding I thought that getting a horse into a “frame” meant using my hands. Coaches would tell me to “take more contact” or “keep my hands steady,” but no one really explained what actually creates true connection… So I kept trying to fix it with my reins. But the more I did, the more resistance I got. My horse felt heavy in my hands, sometimes hollow, sometimes overbent—but never truly through and engaged. It wasn’t until I changed my approach that everything clicked. The truth? A horse won’t come on the bit from your hands alone. Here’s what actually works: ✔️ Your seat and legs create energy – The hindquarters must step under first. ✔️ Your hands receive, not pull – Connection should feel elastic, not restrictive. ✔️ It starts from the back to the front – The shape happens because of correct riding, not because you put the horse’s head there. Once I stopped focusing on my hands and started riding from seat to hand, my horse felt lighter, more supple, and truly connected.
