While you should be getting your dog out of the house as much as possible, sometimes the weather can ruin our plans! Luckily, there are so many activities you can be doing to keep your dog physically and mentally stimulated from the comfort of your home 🫶🏻 I wanted to list some ideas that don’t include tug and fetch, but those are great options too! The more you can add training, impulse control & a mental challenge to the games you play with your pup, the more you will wear them out. My kids asked me to create a workout for them… so we built a 5-minute circuit into our homeschool day. Nothing fancy. Just movements using equipment we have at home that build strong bones and confidence in their bodies. After the first round my daughter said, “Mom, that was fun… can we do this every day?” That right there. That’s the goal. Not punishment. Not “burning calories.” Not earning rest. AVOID THESE MISTAKES⬇️ Effective dog training is based on clear communication. Avoid inconsistent commands. If you’ve asked for a sit and your dog has followed through with a down. Don’t just accept that, reinforce the sit. Dog training requires patience and perseverance. Stop expecting so much too soon. Be patient and give your dog time to learn. Gradually increase distractions but always practice engagement games first before asking your dog to do something more difficult. Training for results requires consistent practice. Not sticking to the plan. If your goal is neutrality, then don’t allow for random encounters with unknown dogs. Use these scenarios as training opportunities. Your dog needs your confidence to stay calm and handle situations appropriately. Lack of confidence. Most of the time our lack of confidence is irrational. The best piece of advice I can give you is to join a supportive club that can soothe your worries and answer your questions.
