A lot of people ask me how to make the perfect texture paste, so here it is—my recipe! 🧩The main ingredient? Wall filler! Yep, you heard that right. You can use joint-compound, all-purpose filler, or plaster. While it’s cost-effective, I personally avoid the powder form because it’s tricky to mix and can mess up the proportions. The paste form is much easier to work with and doesn’t dry too quickly. 🧩To get the right thickness, I mix in some white acrylic paint. The amount of paint depends on how liquidy you want the texture to be, but add it slowly—you don’t want it to get too runny! 🧩For that grainy texture, add fine sand! Just be sure to sift out any larger stones. 🧩Want to add color? You definitely can! Just make sure it’s not a piece where the canvas needs to show through. For example, I wouldn’t add color to my arches textured art since the canvas is part of the design. How to make texture paste? 🎨 I get asked this question multiple times a day, so here's again my recipe for making your own texture paste. 🙌 ➡️ Primary ingredigent is filler. By filler, I mean the general category of products used to fill holes and cracks in walls, such as joint-compound, plaster or renovation filler. Note that not all will work. Some will crack and crumble once dry. You need to experiment to find one that works (or learn from someone who has found the exact brands that work and are also available to you). The four qualities I looked for in the fillers I used: ✅️ Premixed & ready to use (= not in powder form) ✅️ Does not dry too quick (= not a rapid-dry product) ✅️ Can be applied in as thick layers as possible (the filling capacity is often stated in the side of the jar) ✅️ Is the least toxic out of the available options ➡️ Next ingredigent is paint. Use either interior or acrylic paints. Interior paints tend to be cheaper and have a wider colour selection, but they also have a more DIY vibe. To move more from the crafts side to the art side (of arts & crafts), use acrylic paints (and perhaps ready-made texture paste as well, if this is a concern for you). The amount of paint needed depends on how fluid the paste needs to be. The more paint you add, the more fluid your texture paste will naturally become. When creating something with a more defined structure, like petals, I'd use less paint so that the paste is not too runny. Then, for example, for arches I'd add more paint. My ratio for paint to filler ranges roughly from 10-30%. 🎨 What about colours? You can colour the paste directly by using coloured paint. As most fillers tend to be white, the colour of the paste will be a muted or tinted version of the colour you use. In my experience, the end result is more vibrant and rich when you paint the painting once it is dry instead of just colouring the paste.
