This place gives lake day a whole new meaning Welcome to Howe Caverns in Howe Caves, New York. This unique underground adventure is a 3 hour drive from New York City and is worth the trip! Tours are about $30 per person and includes an informative 1 mile guided walking tour along an underground river followed by a 20 minute boat ride on this unique underground lake. The boats are powered completely by your guide by pushing and pulling your boat through the cavern. While in the area make sure to also check out secret caverns, just a few minutes away from Howes Caverns where the vibe is more primitive with even less people. Follow @dominicanabroad for part 3! Just 40 minutes west of Albany, is an area of NY with at least a dozen impressive underground cave systems. I got to visit TWO of them open to the public. The first is Howes Caverns which was discovered in 1842 by a farmer who noticed his cows would gather around the cave when it was hot outside! (That’s because the caves are a nice 52ish degrees year-round and pushed a cool wind up from below). Underground, there are even systems of fresh water, including Lake of Venus. And we even got to take a little boat ride where the water was deeper! These caves were formed about six million years ago by water slowly eroding and carving over time. There is a lot of special natural science history here, from geology to more. If you can get the tour from BRIAN who was AMAZING (and has a great cave singing voice—you’ll see). Next—I can’t wait to share the next TOTALLY different family-owned cave experience with a waterfall, just minutes away. I HIGHLY recommend visiting both caves as a day trip. They’re both super close to each other. Stay tuned for the next one: central upstate NY part 3. This is 3.5 hours from NYC so it could be a day trip or a fun weekend getaway combined with nearby highlights (one hour from Catskills and Hudson Valley). or just easy stop on your upstate New York adventures!

Follow @dominicanabroad for more! 👉🏽Another NY cave find! 😆 this one is called Secret Caves (or Secret Caverns). This family owned spot offers a 1-hour guided tour 85 feet down. It’s like a fun little historic hike in nature through the stunning cave rock formations from millions of years ago (and earlier history too). DEFINITELY pair this visit with Howes Caves (see my previous post—they’re minutes apart but totally different vibes; I cherished both experiences). The cave includes stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone, and showcases a rich collection of prehistoric sea life fossils and formations, with the highlight being a mighty 100 ft underground waterfall. PLEASE NOTE - that Secret Caves is open from 11 AM to 3 PM, Thursday to Tuesday, and closed on Wednesdays. The entry fee is $20 for adults and $10 for kids aged 6-12, with free admission for children under 5. BRING CASH, as there’s no ATM on-site (there’s a gas station 10 minutes away or you can take cash out at Howes Caverns). No reservations are needed. I just showed up. Tours start at the top of each hour. The caverns maintain a consistent temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit, so bring a light jacket even when it’s warm out. Sturdy footwear is a must, as you’ll be in nature.
