The Vessel at Hudson Yards, New York City •What it is: A sculptural, climbable artwork made up of interlocking staircases that visitors can ascend, offering a unique, immersive experience rather than just a visual one. •Design & creator: Conceived by British designer Thomas Heatherwick of Heatherwick Studio. Its honeycomb inspired layout is reminiscent of Indian step wells and amphitheaters. •Height: 150 ft (approximately 16 stories) •154 flights of stairs, around 2,500 steps, and 80 viewing platforms •Built from copper clad steel; the interlocked design can hold up to 1,000 people at once Location & Surroundings •Situated in the 5 acre public square at the heart of Hudson Yards, Manhattan’s newest neighborhood development. •The plaza under The Vessel spans atop a massive platform built over a rail yard, with cooling systems, rainwater storage, and “smart soil” planting, totaling 28,000 plants and 225 trees. •It anchors the northern terminus of the High Line, making it a natural next stop for visitors and locals alike. Fun Facts •Globally assembled: Crafted in Monfalcone, Italy, the 75 prefabricated steel segments were shipped and assembled on-site in New York. •High cost: Originally budgeted at $75 million, final costs rose to between $150–200 million, thanks to its architectural complexity. Noteworthy Events and History •Unveiled in 2016, construction began in 2017 and the Vessel officially opened to the public in March 2019. •Closed in 2021 due to tragic suicides.
